Vanity sizing, measured.

80% of the 3,924 pants, jeans and shorts sizes we hold both a tag and a tape measurement for come out bigger than the tag says. Half of them by 2″ or more.

46 brands, 483 products. Counted per product, so a trouser in twelve colours counts once.

What vanity sizing is

Vanity sizing is when the tag says one number and the tape says a bigger one. A pair tagged 32 that measures 34″ around the waistband is vanity sized by 2″. The number flatters. The trousers don’t change.

We can only check a claim a tape can test. A waist tag claims a number; a medium doesn’t. So shirts, tees, sweaters and jackets can’t be checked this way, and we compare those with each other instead.

Online you buy the number. What arrives is whatever the brand means by it.

What a tagged 32 really measures

Each mark is one brand’s typical tagged 32: the median measured waist across at least 4 of its products. The line is what the tag claims.

How we measured

What’s in
Pants, jeans and shorts with a number on the tag, from brands whose garments we hold measurements for. A tag that says 32 is read as a claim of 32 inches, 81.3cm. Nothing here comes from a body chart: every figure is a measurement of the garment.
What’s measured
The waistband: laid flat, edge to edge, doubled — or the circumference where a source gives that. Of the readings behind these figures, 89% came from the brand’s own size chart, 10% were read from resale and listing pages and under 1% were submitted by people who own the garment. Every figure keeps its source and its measuring method.
How it’s counted
One product at one size counts once, however many colours it comes in. Where several readings cover a size, we take the median and screen the outliers. The headline counts every pair we hold; the brand and tag figures drop pairs where tag and tape are more than 15cm apart, since they’re plainly not describing the same waist.
The bar
A brand needs at least 4 products at a tag to get a figure for it, a tag size needs at least 3 brands, and a brand’s men’s, women’s and unisex lines are counted separately. Where the bar isn’t cleared we print nothing, not an estimate.
What’s out
Anything sold in letters: a medium makes no claim a tape can check. Brands we can’t measure are left off, not estimated. And motive. We measure the gap; we don’t know why it’s there.
A median is not a verdict on one garment
Two garments from the same brand can differ. To see how one of them fits you, add your measurements and compare yourself with that garment’s own numbers.
Freshness
Every figure is read from the database when the page is built, and the page is rebuilt at least hourly. The measurements behind it were last recomputed on 29 September 2026.
The rest of the method
How we measure, score and rank is on the how it works page. Measured something yourself? Add it.
