Methodology

The size is a claim. We check it.

Hemwise compares your body, measured with a tape, against garments measured the same way.

How garments are measured

Where we hold a measurement, it was taken laid flat: pit to pit, shoulder seam to shoulder seam, waistband edge to edge. Each figure keeps its source and measuring method, so a chest circumference and a flat pit-to-pit never share a column. Where several observations cover one dimension, we take the median and screen the outliers.

What the numbers mean

Your measurements are scored against each size’s numbers, weighted by what matters for the category: shoulders count most on a shirt, since no alteration moves a shoulder seam.

Results are ordered by fit estimate, then by how centred your body sits in the garment’s range, then by how well-evidenced its measurements are. Affiliate commissions do not affect the order.

For example: a chest measured 20.75in flat, pit to pit, doubles to about 41.5in around the body. Held against a 40in body chest, that is roughly 1.5in of extra room — the garment’s wearing ease. This is an illustrative arithmetic example, not a claim about any specific garment.

What we refuse to do

Where we hold no measurements, we say so and score nothing. Today that is 7,067 of 12,344 garments: a size run on record, no tape.
